Forestry Earthworks
Mid 2013 saw two dozers on the project felling timber for future milling and clearing areas for forestry plantation. As I am a one man operation, I need to make ease of access within the property so I don't consume more energy doing work than I really need to. Some area were overgrown and needed to be made available for tractor and Yeomans plow and seasonal mulching.
The previous year I salvaged a house that was being demolished and had the contractor dump the rubble on a landing pad which I planned to extend. I had surveyed the area and pegged the boundaries to which to work, While the dozers were here I pushed of the topsoil from the sloping walls of the landing area and proceeded to push the rubble around to create a larger surface area to the entry of the workshop. I also levelled off an area below the landing area for a future 6m x 20m poly tunnel. As the winds come from the north around this area, a 1.5m earthen mound was made above the poly tunnel area to help protect the roof from the winds. The topsoil was replaced and seeded for stability. In the future I hope to plant Bamboo along the crest of the landing area construction area to further reduce the wind intensity.
Access tracks/ firebreaks were implemented along my western boundary and now I can drive comfortably around the entire property. This concludes the three major components of any project. Access, Water and Structures. I was lucky when purchasing this property as it has 9 dams and 9 sheds including cabin and shearing shed.
Several large trees were felled and altogether I have 100 cubic meters of millable timber for future construction and projects within the site. More on milling in future posts. One area behind the Chalet was levelled to create a landing area for stacking logs for milling and enough room for setting up the mobile Lucas mill.
